Next week we will add part B to our song. Use the recording from last weeks post and try playing along to learn part B.
PRACTICE TIPS 1. Review left hand and right hand set up using the pictures in your strings packet. 2. Use the recordings I posted to get more familiar with the songs we are practicing. 3. Sit or stand straight and tall when you practice; violins and violas get that instrument up over and on the shoulder. This week, we continued to work on refining our bowhold, and continued to practice getting instruments to playing position and using the bow.
If you play with the bow and it sounds scratchy, try resetting the bow hold. Also check that the bow is between the bridge and fingerboard. Remember to set up at the balance point of the bow! I've noticed lots of great bow holds in class. Next week we will start working on Boil em Cabbage Down. Use the recordings below while you practice:) Hot Cross Buns Boil em Cabbage Down What to work on this week: 1. Bow Hold 2. Playing Position 3. Bowing open strings 4. Setting left hand in playing position 5. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star 6. Mississippi Hot Dog Rhythm This week we began working on bow hold. Please refer to instructions in the blue book (pg.11) and strings packet for setting up bow hold. If you logon to SIOnline.alfred.com you can access practice videos and audio tracks. (See the code on the back of your blue sound innovations book to get access.) Here are some videos I shared in class for bow hold:
Bass Bowhold Cello Bowhold Violin/Viola Bowhold It's very frustrating for students to play with an incorrect bow hold because holding the bow incorrectly corrects a bad sound on the instrument. I will continue to remind students to practice their bow hold and may even ask students to stop playing to reset the bow hold during class. Although the bow hold can feel uncomfortable and awkward at first, it will become natural with lots of practice:) Please email me with any questions. Things to work on this week: 1. Violins/Violas, putting shoulder rest on and getting the instrument up on the shoulder 2. Cellos/Bass adjusting end pin to the correct height 3. Sitting/Standing straight with good posture (feet flat on the floor) 3. Bowhold 4. String Cycle with bow 5. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (with bow) Welcome to the 5th Grade Strings Blog. I will post weekly updates about what we are working on in class and things to practice at home. All students should have the following items: instrument, music stand, book, shoulder rest (violin and viola).Tomorrow in class students will get their strings packet which we will work from in class; the blue book can be kept at home. Students should bring their instrument, music stand and strings packet to class each day.
Practice Tip: Students should practice their instrument each night for 10 minutes. It helps to practice at the same time and in the same place every time. What to Practice This Week: 1.String Cycle (lowest to highest strings) and reverse String Cycle (highest to lowest string) pluck each string 4 times while keeping a steady beat. 3. Hot Cross Buns 4. ANT Song 5. DAD and GAG Songs 6. Setting up your music stand Other Information: Students should keep a pencil in their music case to use as needed during class. Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns:) This week we worked on a few new songs in class; the students enjoyed learning more notes on their instruments and getting familiar with the class routines. (click on First Songs link for note names).
Some tips for practice: Sit up nice and straight. Keep fingers curved over the fingerboard. Make sure you are plucking slightly over the fingerboard. Keep a steady beat while you play. Students can begin making their first bowholds on a pencil. (See page 11 in the Blue Book for more directions.) Happy Practicing:) FIRST SONGS |
